2008 has been a fantastic one for the Rebel Bass Club. With 6 tournaments down and 6 to go this is a great time to review and remember what has gone on so far this year. The tournament committee decided to buck the trend most area clubs have followed and got away from primarily fishing the "big 3" lakes in South Texas. They decided to fish 6 different lakes in our first 6 tournaments giving members a chance to showcase skills and techniques that are as varied as the lakes that were fished. River lakes, highland lakes, power plant lakes, and huge reservoirs have all challenged this years group of anglers to be versatile in their presentations. It is no surprise that the 6 tournaments have provided 6 different winners, using 6 different techniques. Deadsticking senkos, dragging wacky worms, ripping traps, drifting Carolina rigs, flipping Texas rigs, chatterbaits in hardwoods, and others have produced the winning stringers.
Rebel Bass Club has also seen variety in other areas as well. They have competed using a variety of boats from tricked out jon boats to brand new Skeeters. Ron Carter caught a 50+ lb fresh water Buffalo at Choke and Joey Brown caught a really large catfish at Coleto.
Membership and participation has been solid, with 32 paid members and almost 40 anglers who have participated in tournaments as either members or guests. If anyone is interested in becoming a member or fishing as a guest, email Matt Houston at choust@neisd.net.
The 6 winners so far this year are Matt Houston, Ron Carter, Wayne Tauer, Debbie Hunter, Dale Lazarro, and James Bendele. Eric Tauer has caught the biggest bass of the year with a 10.8 out of Choke Canyon. Matt Houston has the heavy 1 day tournament bag with 16.03 out of McQueeney, while James Bendele has the 2 day tournament heavy bag weighing in 43.37 at Falcon. Matt Houston is the points leader with 465 points and Debbie Hunter leads the ladies with 318.
It has been a great starting half to 2008 and the summer months should continue to bring some "hot" fishing action to those willing to brave the weather.
Our next tournament is at Amistad on June 21&22 - hope to see you there!
