Rebel Bass Clubs March 29th tounament at Choke Canyon Resevior turned out to be frustrating for some, but celebratory for others. The weather was unpredictable as a surprise North wind blew hard for the first several  hours of the day.  The wind then died, then blew from the South pretty strong for the last hour or so of the day. The rain was another surprise for some, and although it never poured, the light rain mixed in with the cooler than expected wind made conditions uncomfortable for the anglers. The fish however, seemed comfortable. So comfortable in the fact that in most areas of the lake, they decided to sleep in and take a late breakfast.  The fish around the birthday girl, Debbie Hunter, however, couldn't resist making her birthday weekend a little better. Fishing behind Ron Carter is like fishing behind a real vacuum cleaner, as Debbie can attest to.  Ron had two keepers real quick, so Debbie made the decision of the tournament, when she decided to upsize her bait to give the fish a different look.  That decision proved to be the right one, as she was culling before Ron caught his third keeper.  Debbie finished with 15+ pounds and won by a large margin of 3 lbs.  Ron had a good day as well with a limit of 11.17 and 3rd place.
Another great decision was made by Eric Tauer.  After a slow start, he made a minor adjustment to his bait and three casts later landed a monster bass that weighed almost 11 lbs. What a beautiful fish. It had already spawned out or we may have had a new club record.  He finished in second place, but took over big bass of the year for the club.  He also is in the running to get a replica of his fish made at club expense.  Our club constitution states that the largest bass over 10 lbs may be mounted at club expense.  (One more reason to join Rebel) Eric's partner Wayne Tauer (owner of The Boast Shop in Universal City) weighed in a 11.08 limit to finish in 5th.
On the other side of the good decision process, Matt Houston 4th place with 11.14 lbs, and Shawn Carnselle 6th place with 10.95 lbs felt like they had made some bad decisions that cost them better finishes.
All in all, Choke seemed to be tough for most anglers. The lake has recieved an unreal amount of pressure this month and it seems to be taking it's toll on the lake.  Weights from all of the tournaments from this year seem to be down from the last several years. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, however.  There is not much better than a Saturday of fishing and competition with friends...Unless...it's winning a tournament on your birthday!

Way to Go Debbie!
