AMISTAD in the WIND – YOU HAVE TO LOVE IT

While not as bad as last month, we still had to tackle 10-20 miles winds at our Spring Amistad Tournament.  Members choose strategic launch sites trying to get out of the frequent gusts only to experience frustration.  We had quite a few anglers that returned to Box Canyon on Saturday afternoon only to learn that the boat ramp was limited to one lane due to a floating pier that had broken free of its moorings.  With the ramp half-way blocked, 15-20 boats lining up to trailer out, and traffic jam that occurred in the trailer area, we had a couple of boats that didn’t make the weigh-in deadline.

While both days experienced wind, fishing was still good overall.  On Saturday, winds were calm till 11:00 which allowed many fishermen to catch limits on crank baits, rattle traps, creature and jerk baits.  Nannette Neugart, in only her second tournament, caught a 8.70 – way to go Nannette.  Eric Tauer was leading after the first day with just over 14lbs fishing with brush hogs.

Sunday started off with a light north wind and continued to increase as the day went on.  Many of our first day fishermen pulled up lines early and headed back to San Antonio before weigh-in.

Scott and Curt Saltz had a great second day fishing protected water on the Mexican side.   Fishing with rattle traps early, brush hogs in later morning, and jerk baits in the afternoon, Scott and Curt caught over 30 fish.  As a matter of fact, Scott used a Carolina-rigged brush hog to pull out our big bass of 9.25 in less than 3 feet of water and finish first overall.

Eric finished 2nd 2lbs behind.

We would also want to recognize and thank our guests that attended the tournament.  Tim Westall (3rd), Dillon Westall (4th) and Curt Saltz (6th).  We hope you all had a great time and can’t wait to see you at Choke Canyon next month.
